| | Togo´s opposition holds fresh election protest Zoom: Aryanews- Several thousand opposition activists demonstrated in the Togolese capital Lome on Saturday in protest at President Faure Gnassingbe's reelection last month. The demonstration, organised by the Republican Front for Change (FRAC), passed peacefully. FRAC supported Jean-Pierre Fabre, candidate of the opposition Union of Forces for Change (UFC), in the election in which Gnassingbe took 61 percent of the votes, according to published official results. Fabre has rejected the results handing victory to Gnassingbe, whose father General Gnassingbe Eyadema ruled the west African nation with an iron fist for 38 years until his death in 2005. Fabre claims to have won between 55 and 60 percent of the ballots. The opposition has staged several protests in Lome to denounce the poll results, with security agents on previous occasions using teargas to disperse the marches and some protesters injured. The opposition coalition called off a planned demonstration a week ago to avoid violence, but Saturday's rally passed without incident despite the authorities' insistence that such demonstrations are strictly banned. Fabre and fellow FRAC leader Kofi Yamgnane took part in the rally, which has become an almost weekly event. "We ask them (ruling party) to give us back power, if they really love this country," Yamgnane told supporters who gathered on Lome beach after the demonstration. Another demonstration is due to be held on April 10.
