| | Ahmadinjead demands US suspension from IAEA Zoom: Aryanews- President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Saturday called for reforms of the global non-proliferation regime and the UN Security Council as he criticized Israel and the Western powers. He was hosting 10 foreign ministers, 14 deputy foreign ministers and nuclear experts from 60 countries at a nuclear disarmament conference called Nuclear Energy for All, Nuclear Weapons for No One. "Nuclear disarmament is a global request and a global concern which has to be tackled," Ahmadinejad said in his opening speech at the two-day event. The president accused the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) of failing to control nuclear proliferation and said a group of independent countries with no nuclear weapons be formed to revise the Non-Proliferation Treaty. He also criticized the political status quo in which the five permanent member states of the UN Security Council - all nuclear powers - have veto rights over global developments. "There should be no expectation from countries with nuclear weapons to seriously follow nuclear disarmament because a knife would never cut its own grip," Ahmadinejad said. He suggested cancelling their veto rights or expanding the Security Council to include permanent members from "independent" countries from Asia, Africa, Europe or Latin America. Ahmadinejad accused the West of double standards by supporting Israel, which reputedly has undeclared nuclear weapons but has not signed the Non-Profileration Treaty and is not an IAEA member. He denounced pressure focused on Iran, which he said is committed to the treaty and the IAEA. "Threats and pressure by world powers against Iran follow political aims, such as domination over the (Middle East) region," he said. Ahmadinejad also said US membership in the IAEA should be suspended because it has used and threatened to use nuclear weapons against other countries. News Code: 20100417191702466 | |
